Episode: 3
Date: 11th September 2010
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Trevor takes you into his own garden to show you how to plant up the verge with low water use plants instead of the near universal lawn..

Dianella
• Goes by the name of Aranda (Dianella caerulea 'Aranda') t
• This is a tough no nonesence sort of plant with strappy leaves and brilliant but tiny blue flowers through spring.
• Dianellas grew up with browsing Kangaroos so are used to having most of their foliage removed occasionally. So they can be pruned mercilessly if necessary.

Sweet Mist Flax
• (Phormium tenax 'Sweet Mist') this tiny growing flax has red-brown foliage and forms dense low clusters of foliage
• It's ideal for a low border.

Tanika
• (Lomandra longifolia 'Tanika') which is related to the grasstree.
• This fine green foliage plant has sweetly perfumed yellow spring flowers.
• Very hardy to cold and heat.
Flamin
• (Phormium tenax 'Flamin') this will eventually grow to around 80cm high and the light sets off a wonderful show of colours as it shines through the leaves.
• An interesting thought - New Zealand flax leaves were used make soft linen like material by the Maoris.

Katrinus Deluxe
• (Lomandra longifolia'Katrinus Delux') to form a bright green backdrop.
