Neville's Tips and Facts

  • The first thing you see in a front garden is the plant selection and lawn, consider a range of low consumer elements in your front garden.
  • There is a lot to choose from including, grass-like plants that can be arranged in massed beds. Foliage feature plants like Cassa Blue Dianella do reward the gardener with a once a year flower show of these tiny but brilliant blue blooms.
  • Try new varieties such as, 'Blaze' this plant is fast becoming known for its dark plum coloured foliage. Plants such as Dianellas are pleasant on the eye and are so tough it would be hard to kill in any garden. And once established you can turn off the reticulation and they can survive on rainfall alone.
  • Kangaroo paws are pretty tough customers too and their flower spikes are colourful and great bird attractors too. To brighten up your front garden plant out a selection of Bush Gems.
  • Succulent plants that hold moisture in their tissues are great choices for waterwise gardens and I have three different types in my garden, including the magnificent Mauritian hemp with its bright golden variegated leaves the ponytail palms which I transplanted into the garden last season and these spiny cactus which have doubled in size in the two years since planting.
  • Lawn has been used very sparingly for ornamental effect rather than a vast expanse of greenery. The variety is Zoysia Empire and it is a slow growing drought tough variety that performs well on water rationing.
  • Under an entire garden you can create a labyrinth of dripline hose that supplies water to the root zone of all the plants in the garden. If you are worried about the look, you can cover them mulch and this will also reduce evaporation.
