Your Garden Retic
Story Title: Your Garden Retic
Episode 2: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 10 October 2010
Presenter: Chris Ferreira
Summer is almost here and it comes on the back of yet another record dry winter, with less than 35% storage in our dams so waterwise gardening is more important than ever.
Chris's Tips and Facts
- When you see some of the watering practices around you could be forgiven for thinking we have got plenty to spare and nothing to worry about. And inefficient reticulations systems cannot only be a waste of our precious water, but once it leaves your place and enters the drains it can become a toxic cocktail for our wetlands and rivers.
- There are many things you can do to shut down the waste and keep your gardens looking good.
- Firstly did you know your lawn only needs 10mm per cycle and to avoid overwatering use an old container, mark 10mm on the side and time how long it takes to deliver this amount.
- While you are at it watch out for dodgy nozzles and even the blades of grass that can grow over the sprinkler, all of which will effect how good the system works and how much water you waste.
- These days micro sprays have no place in a waterwise garden, their fine mist is lucky to hit the ground let alone effectively water your plant. Do yourself a favour by ripping them out and replacing with a dripline, which is far more efficient.
- Driplines are compatible with standard poly pipes so you can plug them in, pin them out and place mulch on top to cover for a system that is up to 95% water efficient.
- My last pet hate is when you see it is finally raining but the sprinklers are still on. A rain sensor can solve this problem, they sit on the top of your roof and when more than about 5mm of rain falls it send an instruction to your controller so your sprinklers can take a break.
