Rare Mushrooms
Story Title: Rare Mushrooms
Episode 1: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 10 October 2010
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Trevor shows us how to enjoy the seasonal tastes of spring, fresh from the Kalamunda Farmers Market.
Fresh tips from the farmers market
- Mushrooms are best stored in brown paper bags, in the crisper section of the fridge. Take care when removing paper bags from the fridge as they can absorb moisture from mushrooms, which can cause tearing.
- Brown paper bags can be found on hand when buying mushrooms; if not, use paper lunch bags. If your mushrooms are packaged in plastic, transfer to a paper bag when storing.
- Be sure to avoid mushrooms with discoloured caps, wrinkles or signs of dampness, as these are past their prime.
- Regular button mushrooms are the most commonly available mushrooms in Australia - available weekly - Kalamunda Farmers Markets.
Featured Mushrooms
Oyster Mushrooms
- Grow best indoors and when exposed to light they fruit really well.
- Are a lot different than most mushrooms and become very meaty once cooked.
- The Oyster mushroom may be considered a medicinal mushroom as it contains statins such as lovastatin used to reduce cholesterol
