Safe Lawns
Story Title: Safe Lawns
Episode 2: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 10 October 2010
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Spring is the season for enjoying our lawns as they respond to the warmer weather with strong growth and improved colour. Neville visits lawn expert Nick Bell to show us how to get best results.
Tips and Facts
- Feeding your lawn can have dramatic effects on the current conditions of our waterways, use a river friendly fertiliser such as Shades of Green Lawn Fertiliser Blend for best results. If you are looking for a river safe product make sure to look out for the ‘Fertilise Wise' logo as safe guide.
- With current water restrictions, your lawns can survive with one watering a week as long as they are correctly fertilised and neatly mowed.
- Mid October is the best time to fertilise your lawn and another feed won't be required until early January, it's important to restrain fertilising any earlier, as you will only be feeding lawn weeds.
- The best way to distribute fertiliser into your lawn is by hand; this way you can make sure all the fertiliser lands on the lawn.
- The best way to tell how a lawn has been stressed through lack of water is by analysing the colour and making sure there is no footprint. A healthy lawn should be green and bouncy.
- The best time to water your lawn is as close to daybreak as possible, to avoid evaporation.
