Rose Transplanting

Story Title: Rose Transplanting
Episode: One
Broadcast Date: 15th September 2012
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

It turns out even Garden Gurus make mistakes. When Trevor Cochrane planted his roses a few years ago, he didn't count on the surrounding trees growing so tall they've blocked the sunlight, so now its time to transplant.

Rose transplanting

  1. The ideal time to transplant roses is in winter when the bush is dormant, however early spring is still acceptable when using a few tricks.
  2. Ensure you prune the plant back hard, as roses can survive even after having 75 per cent of green growth removed.
  3. Roses have shallow roots, so to avoid damaging the roots, cut a wide shallow arch around the plant and gently pull out of the ground.
  4. Immerse the plant into a large tub of water with double the recommended dose of Seasol for 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Once the rose has been transplanted, water with another dose of Seasol to minimise transplant shock.
