Tips and Tricks

• If you're in the market for a good spade, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, the weight. If you're lumping around a heavy spade plus a couple of kilos of soil every time you dig, you'll be feeling fairly fatigued very quickly.
• There are two types of spade blades – pointed and square mouth. If you have hard, stony or heavy clay ground then go for the pointed type. The square mouth is best in easy-to-work soil plus it's great at edging lawns.
• What's the difference between a spade and a shovel? A spade has a flatter blade and is used to piercing and digging, while a shovel has a lip on either side of the blade and is used for scooping and moving soil.
