Get your Citrus in Shape

Story: Get your Citrus in Shape
Episode: 12
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Air Date: 6 November 2021

Australia has the perfect climate for citrus, and they perform brilliantly in pots or the ground. Sue shares her top tips for keeping citrus trees in shape.

  • Citrus trees don’t require pruning to continue to produce.
  • A tip prune is all a citrus tree requires to maintain bushy growth and produce fruit.
  • The presence of ants on your citrus trees are indicators that scale insects are hiding present. Scale insects secrete honeydew, a sweet sticky substance that ants feed off.
  • One simple way to break the cycle of ants and scale is to wrap some duct tape sticky side out around the trunk.
  • The secret to healthy trees is regular feeding and citrus trees will tell you what nutrients they require through the foliage.
  • Green veins or older yellow leaves are common symptoms of nutrient deficiencies. If the root system is shallow, it’s easy to cause leaf drop by a sudden influx of nutrients.
  • It’s this reason why looking after the soil is important and using a controlled-release fertiliser, such as Troforte, is recommended.
  • Troforte controlled-release fertiliser lasts up to 6 months per application.
  • Troforte contains 60 minerals and 24 strains of beneficial soil microbes. This combination results in strong plant resistance to disease, healthy foliage, and nutrient-packed fruit.
  • Troforte is environment friendly, river and reef safe.
  • Don’t forget to water in after application as the microbes are activated with water. For gardeners who have citrus trees in pots, use the liquid Troforte formulation, it's activated as it hits the soil.
