Winter is just around the corner and there are signs everywhere in the garden that things have slowed.

  • The trees are going dormant, but the best sign that winter is on the way are the winter flowers that are about to bloom.
  • First on the list is to actually take a walk around the garden and look for plants that might be overcrowding an area, or some that might have not survived the summer season or are not enjoying where they are growing.
  • Also keep a lookout for plants that can be dug up for division. Because the end of autumn going into winter is the perfect time to do this.
  • One of the first things is choosing to dig up for the season some of the tender tuberous plants, like the Dahlias. This is because you get really cold weather and negative temperatures and plants like these are at a high risk of rotting due to this kind of root.
  • So by digging them up and storing them over the cooler season you are not only protecting them but they can also be divided later on in towards the end of winter to create even more plants for the spring.
  • If you have a plant that needs to be dug up and moved, it’s usually an easy process.
