Getting the best results from native plants

Story: Gardening made easy - Getting the best results from native plants
Episode: 4
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 26th August

Trevor takes a trip to the Water Corporations professional garden, one of his clients for his gardening maintenance company, to show how to maintain native specialist plants.

  • It’s important to ensure that commercial gardens use plants that are hardy, easy to care for and low maintenance, on top of being water-wise. Not just about using plants that originate from places with low water demands.
  • This is very much about garden preparation. The sandy soils found here are nutrient depleted making having a garden full of hardy happy plants much harder. Adding Kaolin clay and rock minerals along with organic matter in the form of soil improver before planting was Trevor’s way of improving the soil.
  • A thick layer of between 100 to 150mm of coarse chunky mulch was placed across the top soil to reduce evaporation. And a wide array of plants originating from low rainfall, hot dry summer locations were sought out as tube stock and planted across the gardens.
  • Each plant placed into the top soil had an added advantage, a special microbe and mineral rich planting tablet from Troforte M.
  • Troforte M Planting tablets ensure your plants against transplant shock, provides up to 8 months of nutrients and contain a specially selected suite of beneficial soil microbes and minerals to improve the soil’s quality microbial life to support plant health and growth.
