Spring is a fantastic time to grow your own plants at home. Trevor shares a way you can do just that without it costing you a cent.
- Growing plants from cuttings is one of the easiest methods of propagation.
- You need rooting gel or powder, propagating sand for succulents and cacti, and peat moss and vermiculite for other shrubs.
- For softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings, mix 3 parts peat moss, 1-part vermiculite and 2 parts coarse sieved river sand.
- You can add a small amount of Troforte M Rejuven8tor. The nutrients and beneficial microbes in it will prove to be especially helpful.
- Remove all the leaves on the cutting except for the top two. Cut those leaves in half.
- Dip the end of the cutting in a rooting gel or powder. This will stimulate callusing and cause fine white feeder roots to develop.
- The cutting will generally be ready to transplant into a larger pot after 6-8 weeks.
- You can plant one cutting per peat pot or several cuttings in a larger pot.
- Water them in and avoid using any fertilisers until they’re in their first home pot and growing with a strong root system.
- Almost any plant can be grown this way, from natives and exotics to evergreens and deciduous trees.
